We have designed a few schooners however, the VIXEN II is our favorite. Ever so often a designer may be commissioned to create a true classic yacht. Not a "psuedo classic", you know the type where they give it a clipper bow or some other feature associated with old designs and the ad men call it "classic". No, I mean a yacht having real elegance and beauty that will not soon be forgotten. I got that opportunity when I was commissioned to design a larger schooner rigged version of Nathaniel G. Herreshoff's New York 40.
The New York 40 design was originally conceived by Herreshoff in 1915 as a flush deck one design racing/cruiser for the New York Yacht Club. The boats measured 58'-9" overall all and 40' on the waterline. They were rigged as gaff topsail sloops although in later years some were marcroni sloops and yawls. Coincidently, I was aboard the original NY40 VIXEN as a youth. She was built in 1916 as JESSICA. By the time I saw her she was a tired old race horse and a mere shadow of her glory days. Many years later our client came into possession of the rotting hulk that was VIXEN. The beauty of the boat inspired him to want a new larger version. To fulfill that dream we researched the archives at MIT for original Herreshoff drawings so that the boat could be properly detailed. Old VIXEN was cannibalized for fittings and hardware that could be included in the new VIXEN II.
Our hull lines reflect a long, lean and deep hull with relatively slack bilges and a forefoot that is moderately cutaway. Bow and stern overhangs are quite long. In fact, the stern overhang is markedly longer than seen on a NY40 and there is much more spring to the sheer line.
In planning the interior primary consideration was given to the owners intention of using the boat in charter service. Two double guest staterooms each with private heads and showers are located forward. A small crews quarters is located in the bows. The Saloon features a large U-shaped dining area with sofa and pilot berth opposite. A stainless steel galley with navigational area opposite is located near the main companionway.
The owners stateroom aft has two large twin berths and a private head and shower. The interior was beautifully executed in raised panel butternut with accents in cherry and walnut. The interior of VIXEN II has been featured in several books on classic yacht interiors.
Every sailor has a soft spot for schooners. No other rig has the same romance attached to it. We designed this boat with a staysail rig which gives good sail versatility and is the most close-winded of the schooner rigs. She carries an ample working sail area of 2200 sq. ft. and with the largest staysail can spread 3200 sq. ft. The owner reported that VIXEN II regularly exceeds speeds of 14 knots under sail. She was a regular at Antiqua Race Week Schooner races for many years.
